'New' Media
The 'new' in new media is seen as an exciting and positive foreword way of thinking. Claims and hopes of exciting new development are attached to the word. The enthusiasm of Westernised culture these days focusses in on the constant need of latest piece of media technology is rarely ever questioned or seen as a bad thing. The common idea now is that if something is 'new' then it is always a positive and beneficial to improving our lives. However the consequences are not viewed in a negative way in which buying into these products is beneficial is enfocring globalization.

Great Laura,
ReplyDeleteNicely focused post, easy to respond to.
What do you think of 'New' Labour?
There's a sense that 'new' has been overused isn't there? It's a bit like the 'post' in postmodern, is there really a break between the pre-postmodern and the postmodern; old & new media? In the 1970s I was involved in TV and we used computers to 'clean up' the signal. Now I still use almost all my 1970s skills in my overwhelmingly 'new media' work. As livingston suggests, reading isn't simply the same online, but it's not completely different -nor is typing for that matter!
So, I'm with Lister et al. when they say that 'new' isn't innocent and that it helps to keep in mind in what ways continuity prevails (not least continuity of who gets to profit and whose lives are reduced?
Incidentally, I don't understand your last sentence -are you trying to say that new media is part of globalization and that that can be a negative thing?
i agree laura- just because something is 'new', that doesn't make it good.
ReplyDeletebut i was thinking... a lot of people do know this, and agree that 'new' media isnt always a positive thing. like those electronic books that theyre bringing out, where you can store 100+ novels in this tiny computer. There was a huge uproar about that because people were saying it's going to ruin librarys etc.
I think when it goes as far as making books electronic, its going TOO far. It seems everything we have these days has to be made electronic in some wayor another, and i don't see the point!
miss you loads and loads :) xx
I agreeee! Thats all I can think of for now, I have read it but will comment properly at a later date..so... RINCY? haha!
