This page is from an article written by Mark Prensky the person who founded the concept digital immigration. The article is very long and indepth and defines in exact terms what digital media is and gives many examples of it. As Prensky coined the phrase you get the most accurate definition of the term. The paper was written in 2001 so quite recent and I would agree that it was up to date with today. The page focusses on the difference between digital natives and digital immigrants and states the assumptions that digital immigrants make against digital natives as they do not understand their new way of learning. However the page does imply that teachers are at a disadvantage to their pupils as the pupils ar more familiar with the technology than the teachers themselves and so know more than the teachers.

I guess up-to-dateness is all relative to context? Many of your colleagues think that 9yrs is a long time online (the article would've taken time to get approved, and so is almost certainly based on 2000's ITC).
ReplyDeleteHe's talking about immersive computer gaming -do you think that's the 'big thing' for youngsters nowadays?
I do agree with the concept of digital immigration most of the time. However, when i think of myself, I was,I suppose you could say born into the digital age and so should be a digital native. This simply isn't the case my father is in his 50's and obviously wasn't born into the digital ages. But he has a much greater knowledge of computers than I do seeing as he's a computer programmer. Do you think in this sense the term coined by prensky is somewhat limiting and flaud?
